About this Event

Special presentation about Honoring the Chinese Transcontinental Railroad Workers Who Helped Modernize America.

You are cordially invited to our special event in honoring the Chinese Transcontinental Railroad Workers. This program will include a screening of Making Tracks: The Phillip P. Choy Story by Barre Fong and Connie Young Yu, based on material in the Chinese Railroad Workers in North America Project at Stanford’s Oral Histories collection. A presentation, The Chinese and the Iron Road: Revealing the Chinese who linked east and west with the transcontinental railroad, will be given by Dr. Roland Hsu, Director of Research of the Chinese Railroad Workers in North America Project at Stanford University.

This talk will offer special access to the new findings by the Chinese Railroad Workers in North America Project at Stanford University. Who were the Chinese who built the railroad? How did they travel across the Pacific? Where were their homes in China, and how did they experience life in the American West? What was their daily life on the line? How did they perform such arduous work? What did they send back to China? What is their place in our cultural memory? We will recover the neglected history of Chinese workers who made up about ninety percent of the workforce that constructed the Central Pacific Railroad, and completed the transcontinental line 150 years ago.

Q&A and Book Signing after the presentation.

This event is FREE to attend, but RSVP is required. Refreshments will be served.

Event will start at 10 AM Promptly. Same-day walk-in availability is not guaranteed.
